SOLO PROJECTS, San Francisco, ca. 1980-1982
I remember having a Revox 4-track machine in my apartment. At the time I was already very much under the influence of Brian Eno, and I'd generally start a track by playing a repetitive percussion figure for some minutes, then lay down some riff, guitar or whatever, and build the song layer by layer. Having only four tracks that meant a lot of "ping-ponging," or "bouncing" from multiple tracks down to one or two, either directly in the four-track machine or on an external cassette deck, and resulted in inferior sound quality, but I don't think that bothered me much. I also imagined one day using "found sounds" as a basis for music. The advent of sampling a few years later was big news.
